Australia's stand-in captain Adam Gilchrist won the toss and elected to bat in the first Test against India at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore on Wednesday.
India went into the match without Sachin Tendulkar who was recuperating from tennis elbow while Australia missed their captain Ricky Ponting who has been ruled out of the first two of four Tests due to a thumb injury.

Aussie leg spinner Shane Warne who has taken 527 wickets now needs 6 more wickets to surpass Sri Lanka's Muttiah Muralitharan as world's highest wicket-taker in Tests.
Anil Kumble, playing at his home ground, needs three wickets to reach the 400-mark.
