South African skipper Graeme Smith was rendered doubtful for the second cricket Test against India beginning in Kolkata on Sunday after he suffered an injury on his left foot in a 'freak accident.'

Smith, who was returning after the practice session at the Eden Gardens, suffered the injury when the vehicle from which he had alighted pulled away and hit him on the left leg, the team's Media Manager Gerald de Kock said.

He said that although an X-ray of the injured leg did not reveal any serious damage, an MRI scan showed some damage to the soft tissues on outside of his foot.

He also confirmed that Smith had pain in his leg and the treatment of his affected leg will continue during the night.

The South African skipper, who was rushed to a private nursing home for initial treatment, could be seen wobbling on crutches with a bandaged leg.

To a direct query on whether Smith will play, de Kock simply said, "you have to wait till tomorrow for the final decision".

"We hope that he will be able to recover by Sunday morning as the whole team wants him to play and Smith himself is very keen to play", he said.

Kock however, said, "the injury does not look serious.

The front wheel luckily did not roll over his foot but stopped after hitting him."

To a query who will replace Smith in case he was ruled out of the match, he said that the team selectors would decide before the match.
