A magnificent double hundred by opener Rowland M Barrington and a century by captain Sujith Somasundar helped Karnataka declare their first innings at 619 for 5 against Madhya Pradesh in their Ranji Trophy Elite Group 'A' encounter on the second day in Bangalore on Friday.
Twenty-four-year-old Barrington, who was unbeaten on 169 overnight, scored 283 and created a new Ranji record for the highest runs by a Karnataka batsman, surpassing Arjun Raja's 267 against Bengal in Kolkata.
The batsman was finally dismissed caught at fine leg by Patvardhan off S Pandey.
Barrington also equalled Rahul Dravid's record of three double centuries with this knock. His other double tons were two against Jammu and Kashmir and one against Assam in the previous season.
Somasundar, who put on 229 runs with Barrington for the second wicket, scored 104 runs, before being caught by Devendra Bundela off Y Golwankar.
Sunil Joshi scored a brisk 34 off 25 balls, that included three boundaries and two sixes, before the hosts, who began the day at 357 for one, declared the innings 20 minutes before tea.
In reply, Madhya Pradesh were 120 for one before play was called off for the day due to bad light.
Opener Naman Ojha was caught behind by V S Tilak Kumar off the bowling of R Vinay Kumar for a duck in the second over, but captain Amay Khurasia (batting 45) and opener Sachin Dholpure (batting 65) held firm.
