Skipper Mukund Parmar hit 73 as Gujarat scored 286 for seven wickets on the opening day of the Ranji Trophy Elite Group A match against Karnataka at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore on Tuesday.

The hosts failed to press home the advantage with Gujarat reeling at 139 for five at one stage. The lower order then rose to the occasion to deny Karnataka the edge.

Opting to bat, Gujarat did not have a good start with openers Akash Christian (6) and Nilesh Modi (17) back in the pavilion when the team had made 60.

Niraj Patel made an entertaining 54 with nine fours while Parmar's patient 150-ball knock contained 12 fours.

Wicketkeeper-batsman Parthiv Patel (16) could not stay for long.

The visitors fought back in the post-tea session which saw the fall of only one wicket, that of Bhavik Thakkar (23).

At stumps, Timil Patel was batting on 35 and Siddarth Trivedi on 39. The duo has already put on 62 runs for the unfinished eighth wicket.

For Karnataka, Vinay Kumar and Dodda Ganesh picked three wickets each.

Spinner Sunil Joshi sent down as many as 30 overs but went wicketless.
