A masterly century by Jacob Martin helped strong contenders Baroda gain a vital first innings lead of 74 runs at the end of third day of the four-day Ranji Trophy tie against Assam in Guwahati on Tuesday.
Batting in the second innings, Assam were 71 for one at close at the Nehru stadium.
Martin crafted a patient 126, studded with 14 hits to the fence and one six, off 338 balls, as he warded off a spirited Assam attack.
Assam spinners Sukhbinder Singh (3/70) and Arland Konwar (3/109) toiled hard on a placid pitch as Martin stood like a rock while tail enders contributed their bit to the total.
Rakesh Patel continued to show fine form as he followed his good bowling performance (4/82) in the first innings with a useful 35 with former India wicketkeeper Nayan Mongia and Rajesh Pawar contributing 21 each.
