Virender Sehwag's 228 on the opening day of the Multan Test are the maximum runs scored by an Indian in a single day's play in Test cricket.

To put Sehwag's performance in right perspective, this statistician went through the details of all 1693 Test matches played till date and came-up with the startling fact that there have been only six better performances than Sehwag's effort in all Test matches.

Interestingly it was also Sehwag who held the previous record for India. He had made 195 on the opening day of Melbourne Test in December 2003.

The world record is in the name of Don Bradman, who is the only batsman to score 300 runs in a day.

The accompanying table lists the top-10 batting performances in a single day's play. It will be observed that Sehwag's performance is the best by any batsman (along with South African Herschelle Gibbs) since 1954.
