Propelled by an unbeaten century by Rizwan Shamsad, Uttar Pradesh gained the first innings lead against hosts Hyderabad on the second day of the Elite 'B' Ranji Trophy match played at Gymkhana grounds in Hyderabad on Tuesday.
Resuming at 236 for 8, hosts folded up after adding ten runs to the tally while Uttar Pradesh, after losing opening pair for 36 dropped anchor and were 279 for six at stumps.
Rizwan played a patient innings, after openers Rohit(9) and Jyoti Yadav (9) were dismissed early and compiled a 67 run partnership for the third wicket with Suresh Raina, who played aggressively to compile 49 runs off just 60 balls with six fours before he was caught by Daniel Manohar.
Playing with caution, Rizwan scripted an unbeaten essay of 103 runs and was involved in a 114-run partnership with Gyanender Pandey, who scored a fine 61 with eight hits to the fence.
Rizwan's 103 was the result of his 310 minute effort at the wicket hitting 16 fours off 205 balls. Praveen Gupta, 3, was at the crease with Rizwan at close of play.
Hyderabad speedsters NP Singh and Shahnawaz claimed three wickets each while recalled medium pacer Vishnuvardhan took two wickets.
Earlier, hosts resuming at 236 of 8 added ten runs before Winston Zaidi dismissed the last two batsmen in quick succession to return with figures of 3 for 41 while Salabh Srivatsava and spinner Praveen Gupta too claimed three wickets each while RP Singh accounted for Daniel Manohar.
