Baroda's batsmen failed to capitalise on the good work of seamer Rakesh Patel and spinner Rajesh Pawar on the opening day of the Ranji Trophy match against Hyderabad on Saturday.

After the bowlers bundled out Hyderabad for 170 runs in the first innings, they simply flopped and Baroda were struggling at 23 for four at close.

Electing to bat, Hyderabad ran into rough weather as Patel (5-40) made the most of the morning dew and claimed the first four wickets with the score reading 48.

Daniel Manohar offered stubborn resistance with a valiant 54 before he snicked an incoming delivery from Patel into the hands of keeper Nayan Mongia.

Pawar (4-21) blew off the lower order. He faced resistance only from Ibrahim Khaleel, who scored a brilliant 48, and Shivaji Yadav, who scored valuable 26 to take the total to 170.

Baroda's innings started on a shaky note with Hyderabad speedster N P Singh claiming opener Connor Williams for just eight runs, after which three wickets fell in quick succession in a space of three runs.

The visitors were reduced to 23 for four when stumps were drawn.

For Hyderabad, N P Singh returned impressive figures of 5-3-6-3 while his new ball partner Mohammad Ghouse claimed the wicket of S Parab (2).

Jacob Martin (12) and Sekhar Joshi (0) were at the crease at stumps.
