Hosts Karnataka shot out Bengal for 228 to secure the vital first innings lead of 183 runs and force the visitors to follow-on in their Ranji Trophy Elite Group B match on the penultimate day in Mandya, Karnataka, in Monday.
Resuming at overnight seven for no loss in reply to 411 made by Karnataka, Rohan Gavaskar-led Bengal failed to rise to the challenge. Laxmi Ratan Shukla (86) and Sanjib Sanyal (43) offered solid resistance before the innings folded in 99.5 overs.
The highlight of the Bengal's innings was an 89-run stand between Shukla and Sanyal, who hit six fours, for the sixth wicket. Shukla then shared a 50-run partnership for the seventh wicket with Utpal Chatterjee (14).
Shukla's 123-ball knock had eight fours and three sixes.
For Karnataka, Dodda Ganesh grabbed four wickets for 54 runs, while Sunil Joshi scalped three for 49.
At stumps, Bengal were 17 for the loss of the wicket of Deep Dasgupta (0) in their second knock.
