1st Test - Mohali

In the backdrop of the Mike Denness controversy and a jaded, jet-lagged Indian outfit low on confidence after the South African tour, the first Test was going to be England's best chance of winning a Test in India.

But, Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh tweaked the Englishmen out of contention at Mohali, claiming 14 scalps.

Statistic of the match: Day 1
James Foster at 21 years 233 days, became the fourth youngest debutant wicket-keeper to appear for England. However, Foster became the youngest 'keeper for England in an 'away' Test match. The previous youngest was Alan Knott (21-340), against West Indies at Port of Spain in March 1968.
