The Batsmen

Mike Gatting

A short man with a sturdy built, Gatting was a tenacious, hard-hitting, right-handed batsman who could bowl useful medium pace too.

But despite all the talent he possessed he failed to capture a regular spot in the England squad until the 1984/85 tour of India. In the first Test in Bombay, he made his first Test century, a superb 136, and followed it up by a double century at Madras. He scored 575 runs, at an average of 95.33 on that trip.
