CA, Mastek to push IngresThe Bombay-based Mastek Limited and the US-based Computer Associates have chalked out a three-phased strategy to out-market Sybase and Informix in the country with CA's Ingres Relational Database Management System.Ingres has been in the database market since the 1980s but the direct entry of CA in India last year is expected to aggressively enhance the prospects of the product, whose market share in India has been eroding over the years.
CA itself handled the first phase in establishing its corporate entity. The second and third phases (which would start from February) will involve establishing CA's image as an information management entity. This will be done jointly by CA and Mastek. Apart from the marketing campaign, CA, as part of its investment in the country, is putting in about $100 million over the next five years, company sources have claimed. CA has three lines of business - information management, enterprise management and business applications - of which the company focuses only on the first two areas in India. The information management suite of products that is being marketed by Mastek in the country includes OpenIngres (the upgraded version of Ingres), Jasmine (object oriented multimedia database) and Opal (client/server database). If one goes by the International Data Corporation figures, Ingres' market share has been receding. It had 7 per cent and 5 per cent of the RDBMS market in 1995-96 and 1996-97 respectively. As opposed to this, Sybase and Informix had 20 and 10 per cent of the Rs 1 billion RDBMS market in 1996- 97. CA's entry into the country is also seen as beneficial to Mastek as almost 50 per cent of its Indian operations come from distributorship of Ingres. Currently there are about 200 installations of the RDBMS package in the country, said Corda. Mastek's other software activities are in the areas of manufacturing, finance and government. Apart from India, Mastek has operations in the US, the UK, the Far East, Australia, Japan and Germany. The company, which has a turnover of Rs 700 million 1996-97, hopes to be a Rs 1-billion plus company in 1997-98. - Compiled from the Indian media |
