The Rediff Chat

Dear user,
Below is a guide to help you through the chat process.

Registration
The Rediff Chat has over 1 million registered users so you may not be able to get the exact nickname you desire.
So if you would like to have John as your username, it will most probably be in use. Instead try a combination, John 123 or Cool_dude_John.

Your rediffmail username and password will not work on The Rediff Chat. You need to register separately for the two services.

Rooms
The new look Rediff Chat gives you an option of 60 new chat rooms.
However Geographic rooms are on one server and Lifestyle and Hangouts are on another server.
We have done this so that the load on servers can be balanced and we can give you a faster service.

Please note that if you choose a room from the Geographic rooms option, once you enter the chat room and click on the Rooms icon, you will see only the Geographic rooms.

To meet chatters that are on the other server you will have to click your Exit button and choose a room from the Hangouts or Lifestyle drop down menu.

We have placed rooms in Hangouts and Lifestyle on the same server. So when you click the Rooms icon all the rooms in the former and latter category will be visible to you.

To meet chatters in the Geographic rooms you will have to click the Exit button and choose a room from this category.

Chat Option
We recommend Java Lite Chat option since it is the fastest to load on any given bandwidth.
However if you have a 33.6 k modem or higher bandwidth access you can choose Java Chat which has options like seperate window options for Direct Messaging.

If your line speed is extremely poor then HTML Chat is your best option.

Direct Messaging
You can exchange private messages with your friends using this device on all the three Chat Options.
Incase a user is harassing you by sending unsolicited private messages, simply click on his name and choose the Ignore User Option.

If the user is a friend, you can click the Make Buddy option, whereby whenever he/she logs on the Chat you will recieve a message on your chat window informing you of the users arrival.

Public / Private Rooms
We have created a lot of rooms with geographic and interest group and lifestyle specifications. However you are free to create your own Public or Private Rooms

Public Rooms
Click on the Rooms icon and choose the Create Room facility.

Enter the room name and choose the Public option.

This room will be available until the last user does not exit the public room, after that there will be no record of this room. There is no limit on the number of users who can enter a public room.

Private Rooms
If you would like to talk in the privacy of a chat room choose the Create Room facility.
Enter the room name and choose the Private option.

This room will be available until the last user does not exit the private room, after that there will be no record of this room. There is no limit on the number of users who can enter a private room.
